Always

#checkwaterfirst

When a child goes missing… ALWAYS check water first.

If a child is missing, always check nearby water first, before roads, houses, or parks.

When a neurodivergent child goes missing, water is one of the greatest dangers. Many are instinctively drawn to water and 2x as likely to die from drowning.

We have created this campaign to raise awareness of this life-saving step.

Drowning is fast and silent. Every second counts. But one quick check can save a life.

This campaign aims to make the reflex of checking water first automatic in every community, especially where neurodivergent children live, learn, or play.

Child drowning deaths in England have increased by 105% since 2019

(Royal Life Saving Society UK, 2024).

Around 75,000 children are reported missing in the UK each year.

(Russell, 2025).

1 in 2 neurodivergent children wander

(Anderson et al., 2012).

When wandering ends in death, around 71% of those cases are due to drowning.

(National Autism Association, 2017).

Drowning happens fast - a child may struggle for as little as 30 seconds, lose consciousness within 1 minute, and suffer permanent brain injury within 2 minutes. There are under 5 minutes to act.

(McCall & Sternard, 2023b).

ALWAYS #CheckWaterFirst - because they don’t always call out, and there are no second chances.

(Safety note: This campaign promotes awareness only and does not guarantee safety or rescue outcomes. If a child is missing, call 999 immediately and follow emergency guidance.)

The 30
Second Challenge

.

Our 30-Second Challenge is a powerful awareness campaign that highlights how fast drowning can happen, often in less than a minute.

When it launches, participants will hold their breath and perform the standing mountain climber exercise for 60 seconds. This simulates the exhaustion, panic, and breath-holding struggle a child experiences in the water when they can’t swim or call for help.

It’s tougher than it looks and that’s the point.

The challenge helps people understand the urgency of drowning prevention and why inclusive, neurodivergent-friendly water safety education is vital.

Stay tuned for the launch, soon you’ll be able to film your attempt, share it on social media, donate, and nominate others to take part in support of The Neurodivergent Leisure Group CIC’s mission to build safer, accessible swimming facilities for every child.
